We are a main venue for the Edinburgh International Festival each August and to acclaimed international orchestras throughout the year. Here is a little information about them – more details can be found on the individual company websites.
Royal Scottish National Orchestra
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is one of Europe's leading symphony orchestras. Formed in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, the company became the Scottish National Orchestra in 1950, and was awarded Royal Patronage in 1991. Throughout its proud history, the Orchestra has played an important part in Scotland's musical life, including performing at the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament building in 2004.
The RSNO Choruses
For choral performances the Orchestra is joined by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus, Chorus Director Timothy Dean, one of the most distinguished large symphonic choruses in Britain, and the acclaimed RSNO Junior Chorus, Chorus Director Christopher Bell.
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Now in its 76th year, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is a core part of BBC Scotland’s output and performs in venues across Scotland. They appear annually at the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival, as well as at major festivals throughout the world.
Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Formed in 1974, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra is one of Scotland’s five National Performing Arts Companies and is internationally recognised for its innovative approach to music-making and programme planning. The Orchestra performs throughout Scotland, including annual tours of the Scottish Highlands and Islands and South of Scotland, and appears regularly in the Edinburgh, East Neuk, St Magnus and Aldeburgh festivals and the BBC Proms. The SCO broadcasts regularly and has a discography exceeding 140 recordings.
