About Us - The pianos

The Usher Hall posses three Steinway Concert Grand pianos available for use in concert or recital for the esteemed soloists that grace this prestigious platform.

Steinway

Steinway No.1 Model D-274

Grand serial No. 547158(2000) Black High Gloss.

This piano was selected by Alfred Brendel specifically for the Usher Hall. The piano was a gift to the Edinburgh International Festival and is permanently housed at the Usher Hall. This piano has a large dynamic range making it suitable for solo and concerto playing and also for accompaniment.

Steinway No.2 Model D-274

Grand Serial No. 513465 (1989) Black Satin.

This piano has a more mellow tone quality, which is more suited to some solo programmes and accompaniment including within orchestras.

Steinway No.3 Model C-227

Grand Serial No. 419630 (1970) Mahogany High Polish.

This piano resides in the Artist Suite and is used for warm-up and conductor-soloist consultation. For stage use, it is acceptable for concerts other than classical.

When not in use the pianos are housed in a specially designed studio located in the basement area of the Usher Hall and under the strict control of Usher Hall management.
