Monday 28 January 2019

Join City Organist John Kitchen for his popular lunchtime concerts on the world renowned Usher Hall organ with its magnificent sound. Whether performing organ classics, adapting classical and other music or playing audience requests, John's inimitable performances and conversation will delight.

Monday 7 January     Seasonal organ music

A programme of music for Christmastide and the New Year, including pieces by the flamboyant 18th-century French composer Balbastre,  as well as music by Bach and his pupil Krebs.  Also included are   John Ireland’s The Holy Boy and Benjamin Britten’s  New Year Carol;  a stirring set of variations on the carol In dulci jubilo by the Canadian Denis Bédard;  and Strauss’s  Emperor Waltz to celebrate the New Year as they do in Vienna!

Monday 14 January   Composer anniversaries

We mark significant composer anniversaries with a wide range of  music, ranging from  the famous Pavane by  Thoinot Arbeau,  born 500 years ago,  to organ music by Kenneth Leighton,  born in 1929.   The programme also includes two pieces (including the famous Sortie in E flat)   by Lefébure-Wély, a beautiful serenade by the Italian opera composer  Leoncavallo,  and ending with Offenbach’s celebrated Can-can.

Monday 21 January    The best of Mendelssohn

This all-Mendelssohn programme contains both original organ pieces and transcriptions, including one of his celebrated organ sonatas and a prelude and fugue—music inspired by Bach.  We hear also the Nocturne and Wedding March  from A midsummer night’s dream,  the Adagio from the ‘Scottish’ Symphony,  and the  Spring Song, originally for piano.

Monday 28 January    A programme of audience requests

John will be looking for  more suggestions from audience members!
