Stephen Hough performs Mendelssohn's first piano concerto alongside the composer's famous Hebrides Overture
3:00pm, Sunday 19 November 2017
Stephen Hough is a concert pianist of virtuosic technique and adventurous self-expression. Both skills are demonstrated in spades when he joins the Basel Chamber Orchestra for Mendelssohn’s first Piano Concerto which contains many sections of improvisation, one of the composer’s (and Hough’s) specialities.
The Orchestra also performs Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture, inspired by the composer’s memorable trip to the Scottish island of Staffa The work paints a vivid picture of rolling Scottish seas and waves crashing against the famous Fingal’s Cave.
To complete the programme our Swiss guests present Schubert’s ‘Great’ Ninth Symphony. This breathtaking work is arguably more powerful than any of his other symphonies and in the hands of the Basel Chamber Orchestra is an unadulterated masterpiece.
