** CHANGE OF CONDUCTOR**

Thomas Dausgaard, the BBC SSO’s Chief Conductor, is unwell and is therefore unable to appear with the orchestra this week.   The concert on Sunday afternoon will now be conducted by Alpesh Chauhan.  There will be a slight change of repertoire: the advertised work by Toshio Hosokawa will be replaced by Mendelssohn’s Overture: The Hebrides; the other items in the programme (Bruch and Mahler) remain as advertised.

Alpesh Chauhan is Principal Conductor of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Parma. Highlights of his career to date include concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra, his BBC Proms debut with the BBC Philharmonic and appearances with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra where until 2016 he was Assistant Conductor.  He last worked with the BBC SSO in December 2018.

A lone trumpet sounds in the darkness and Gustav Mahler begins his great symphonic struggle from tragedy to triumph – by way of midnight storms, joyous horn-calls, and arguably the most tender love-letter ever written without words: the rapturous Adagietto. In this opening concert of the new BBC SSO season, Thomas Dausgaard brings both his unequalled command of symphonic structure, and his profound feeling for late romanticism. Bruch’s much-loved Violin Concerto comes from the same world of solitary wanderers and distant horn-calls, and it’s perfect for what one critic has called the “lovely freedom and sense of fantasy” of Henning Kraggerud – a violinist who has something fresh to say in even the most familiar music.

Mendelssohn         Overture: The Hebrides (change from original)
Bruch                     Violin Concerto No.1
Mahler                    Symphony No.5
