Gioachino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, clearly named with ironic tongue in cheek, is actually a very substantial work and full of exuberant passages, as might be expected from a composer who in earlier years made his name in great Italian opera writing. The versatile Edinburgh Bach Choir aims to combine the precision of Rossini’s original twelve singers with a robustness suitable for the larger set pieces in the work.
Gavin Bryars’s intriguing choral work On Photography was composed for the opening ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics using the text of a poem by Pope Leo XIII – atmospheric and mysterious.
