Popular lunchtime concerts with John Kitchen

Monday 03 September 2018 to Monday 03 December 2018

Join City Organist John Kitchen for his popular lunchtime concerts on the world renowned Usher Hall organ with its magnificent sound. Whether performing organ classics, adapting classical and other music or playing audience requests, John's inimitable performances and conversation will delight.

Autumn 2018

Monday 3 September  at 1.10pm with JOHN KITCHEN
This programme will be an exploration of the fantastic legacy of Parisian organ music from across the centuries:  works by Couperin,  Balbastre (Variations on the Marsellaise!), Saint-Saëns, Widor, Vierne, Messiaen…. and a repeat of Michael Thomson’s  Parc de Paris, conjuring up the sound of a French accordion by the banks of the Seine.    This last piece will feature on John’s new CD recorded on the Usher Hall organ and soon to be released.

Monday 10 September at 1.10pm with JOHN KITCHEN
One way of devising a varied programme is to play music by composers who have anniversaries in a particular year.  This year’s anniversaries include those of Hubert Parry  (died 1918)  and Vaughan Williams (died 1958).  Other composers featured will be  Walond, Gounod and Couperin (350 years old this year).

Monday 17 September at 1.10pm with JOHN KITCHEN

The Best of Baroque

John presents  a programme of attractive and tuneful  17th- and 18th-century music by Lübeck, Böhm,  Purcell, Bach,  Scarlatti and  Handel.

Monday 24 September at 1.10pm with JOHN KITCHEN
Another programme of audience requests.    This recital will be immediately  followed by a demonstration of the organ,  when  those interested will be invited up to see the console at close quarters and to learn something of its mysteries and intricacies.

Monday 5 November at 1.10pm with JOHN KITCHEN
As in past years,  John will  offer a varied programme of memorial music in the week of a special festival entitled To Absent Friends  which takes place each year in early November.   Further information can be found on the To Absent Friends  website.

Monday 3 December at 1.10pm with JOHN KITCHEN
CALUM ROBERTSON,  and the EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY SINGERS
Get Organised returns with the hugely popular annual choir and organ Christmas special,  when the Edinburgh University Singers (conducted by Calum Robertson)  and John Kitchen at the organ present varied  seasonal music for Advent and   Christmas, including audience carols, and  some of the usual favourites without which the run-up to Christmas is incomplete.
