Smetana Ma Vlast - The Moldau (Vltava)

Bartok Concerto for Orchestra

Dvorak Symphony no6 in D

Our first concert of the New Year has a central European theme - music from the Czech Republic and Hungary. Smetana's evocative depiction of the mighty river Vltava is undoubtedly the best loved of his cycle of six tone poems, while Dvorak's sixth symphony, although less well know than his 'New World', is brimful of unforgettable melodies; one of his sunniest compositions. If the Dvorak symphony is undeservedly neglected, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra is certainly his most popular work. It is a passionate and exciting composition, his last major work, written in America and premiered in 1943. This Concerto for Orchestra presents exactly the sort of challenge upon which Sinfonia thrives. Come and hear us!
