Butterworth - A Shropshire Lad
Vaughan Williams - Sypmphony no5 in D
Elgar/Payne - Symphony no3
If you thought Elgar wrote only two symphonies, think again! In 1931 his creativity was rekindled after a decade of virtual silence following the death of his wife, by a chance encounter with violinist Vera Hockman. Vera, forty years Elgar's junior swiftly became his close companion and muse. The result was a new symphony. Tragically, the work was left unfinished on Elgar's death but enough remained for a completion to be made and in 1998, Anthony Paine's reconstruction was premiered. Do not miss this rare opportunity to hear this magnificent 'new' work live! When Vaughan Williams' Fifth Symphony was first heard in 1943, audiences were in the midst of World War unprepared for this most serene of his nine symphonies. It makes a perfect companion to Elgar's turbulent opus.
