St Andrew Camerata - Janacek and Kodaly

8:00pm, Saturday 09 November 2019 St Mary's Cathedral

St Andrew Camerata 25th Anniversary Concert

On Saturday 9 November we will celebrate our 25th Anniversary with a performance of the Missa Brevis of Zoltán Kodaly (1882 - 1967)  and rarely heard motets by Leoš Janáček (1854 – 1928) . We will also perform the lush Ave Maria for upper voices with organ and Esti Dal by Kodály

We return to St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral (where the choir was formed) with Howard Duthie at the organ. The circumstances of this concert will be vastly different from it's first performance! During the siege of Budapest in the winter of 1944/45, Kodály and his wife were forced to seek refuge in the cellars of the Budapest Opera House. It was in one of the Opera House cloakrooms that the premiere took place on 11 February 1945, performed by a choir made up of the Opera company’s soloists, who were accompanied by a harmonium.

Dating from 1874-75 Janáček's motets (of which we will perform 7) are liturgical pieces written exclusively in Latin and foreshadow some of his more mature work.
