Sunday Classics

Brussels Philharmonic with Nikolaj Znaider

Bruch's dazzling first violin concerto with Nikolaj Znaider and Brussels Philharmonic

3:00pm, Sunday 12 November 2017

Nikolii Znaider

The Herald described the Brussels Philharmonic as “a class act”and “technically superb” when they visited the Usher Hall in 2016. This year they return with chief conductor, and Edinburgh favourite, Stéphane Denève for another wonderful Sunday Classics programme.

Listeners voted Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 in the Classic FM Hall of Fame. Bruch really was the master of writing for string instruments, and this, his most famous work, is dazzling. Violinist Nikolaj Znaider explores the full range of his 1741 Guarneri “del Gesu” violin as he takes us towards the heavens.

Turnage’s Passchendaele was written to commemorate the anniversary of the First World War and receives its Scottish premiere almost 100 years since the Battle of Passchaendale which was fought in 1917 in Belgium.

Then we have a change of pace as Denève and his Orchestra perform suits from two thrilling 20th century dance works.Prokofiev’s jubilant Cinderella was written in 1945 and is one of his most popular and tuneful compositions, whilst Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe is some of the composer's most passionate music.
