Sunday Classics: St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra

Rachmaninov’s glittering First Piano Concerto, plus Prokofiev’s tragic Romeo and Juliet

3:00pm, Sunday 31 May 2020

Noriko Ogawa

Muscular musicality; bristling energy; an unmistakable Russian sound. The St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra is one of Russia’s finest, celebrated at its Usher Hall concert in 2017, and making a welcome return with a brilliantly colourful concert of drama and dazzling virtuosity.

Eminent Japanese pianist Noriko Ogawa is one of the musical world’s experts at blending athletic power and delicate poetry, both qualities firmly on display in the spectacular keyboard pyrotechnics of Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto. Written when the composer was just a teenager, this remarkable piece glitters with unapologetic showmanship and youthful passion, but shows remarkably maturity and insight too.

Sergei Prokofiev transformed Shakespeare’s great love story into one of the world’s most glittering ballet scores – with the feuding Montagues and Capulets striding to music made famous by The Apprentice. Immerse yourself in this achingly tragic musical portrayal of tender young love.

Respected Russian conductor Nikolai Alexeev opens his concert with Sibelius at his most patriotic: the rousing, celebratory Finlandia.
