Prokofiev’s captivating Second Violin Concerto, plus Sibelius’s majestic Fifth Symphony
3:00pm, Sunday 15 March 2020
A hymn of praise to the natural world. A blazing celebration of his Finnish homeland. Sibelius’s majestic, magnificent Fifth Symphony surges ever forward with unstoppable optimism, propelling the listener along to the grandeur of its euphoric finale, inspired by a vision of 16 swans in flight.
This life-affirming symphony forms the glowing conclusion to the Swedish Philharmonia’s joyful concert under Principal Conductor Jaime Martín, renowned for his electrifying energy.
Russian-born violinist Viktoria Mullova is soloist in her compatriot Prokofiev’s captivating Second Violin Concerto, full of dark comedy, child-like fantasy and even a taste of Spain in its madcap finale.
Martín and his orchestra open their concert with Mendelssohn at his most spiritual: his Reformation Symphony looks back to the glories of the Baroque with hymn tunes ringing around and across its rich textures, building to a conclusion of raucous glory.
