Less than a month after Latter-day Saints pioneers arrived in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in 1847, a small choir was gathered to sing for a church meeting.  That was the beginning of what has become The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.  Today, the Choir, composed of 360 volunteer voices, and the Orchestra at Temple Square, a 200-member, all-volunteer symphony orchestra organized in 1999, continue to serve as musical ambassadors for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Since its first tour to Chicago in 1893, the Choir has traveled extensively across the United States and abroad.  It has performed throughout Europe and in music capitals from Israel and Russia to Japan and Australia and at North America’s most prestigious venues and music festivals.

Nearly 200 recordings have showcased the Choir since its first recording in 1910. The group won a Grammy award, has earned five gold and two platinum records, and has received 4 Emmy awards. In 2003, the Choir was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest arts recognition by the United States. The Choir has its own recording label and thirteen of its recent releases have hit number one on Billboard’s classical charts.

The Choir’s weekly 30-minute Music and the Spoken Word program, heard each week since 1929, is carried on radio, television, and cable networks across the country and around the world.

The 2020 Heritage Tour features the first performances in Nordic countries since 1982 and the first visits to Wales and Scotland since 1955.
