A  varied selection of pieces based on pre-existing chorale and hymn tunes.  For centuries composers have crafted solo organ pieces in this way,  and for the listener the advantage is that the tunes, often well-known,  are usually easily recognisable!  Composers in this programme include JS Bach and some of his 18th-century contemporaries;  Romantic composers such as Stanford and Parry,  and more recent composers such as Arthur Wills whose Carillon on ‘Orientis partibus’   is a brilliant and thrilling  tour de force
